Cigarette Tax Revenues UP
With cigarette taxes rising in practically every state around the United States, you would expect that the higher cigarettes taxes would deter smokers somewhat. In Dallas there was an increase in tax collections in cigarettes this year of $53.5million! Even though cigarette tax revenues have increased by a huge sum, actual cigarette sales throughout states around the U.S.A are in fact down by 12%.
Cigarette taxes of around $125m in Dallas were collected in February, but it is said that it is far too soon to say whether the annual cigarette tax collections will pass that of 2006 cigarette taxes. In Dallas state cigarette taxes rose at the start of 2007 by $12 per carton, and was first feared that smuggling of cigarettes into Dallas will become a problem. The U.S. border and customs control reported that there is no attempt whatsoever of smuggling into Dallas although so far, where they have currently only found up to now a few packs of cigarettes here and there in cars coming into Dallas.
